The Dark Watchers
By Louis Roberts
Zoom out from Scandal to some bins about 100 yards from the scene. Two men are crouched.
“Jeez. She has a temper on her.” whispered one of the men. He had a dark trench coat and was peering between the bins as Scandal was kicking the man on the ground.
They watched as Scandal laser wrote into the forehead of the other man and leave the scene.
“We better follow her eh Gus.” said the other man. He wore a similar outfit, but also had a black fedora pushed down his head. His grey eyes peered from under the brim at the girl leaving.
The two got up from the bins and ran quietly over to the bodies.
“Shall we call it in Kiltoe?” asked Gus
“No.” The man called Kiltoe looked at his wrist pad at the health of the two. “One is dead. The other will live for a few hours. Somebody will find them. If we call it in, it will only get … complicated.”
The two men moved up to the alley that the girl had gone down. Kiltoe held his hadn against Gus to stop him from going in, then peered around the corner. The girl was skipping down the alley way quite fast. She stopped briefly to pick up a bag hidden under a crate and then quickly turned around another corner.
Sweat beaded down Kiltoe. “Ok let’s follow, but look sharp. She picked something up.”
The men ran down the alley. They stopped at the overturned crate. There was nothing to indicate what had been under it.
The men cautiously went around the corner.
“This is like a warren.” whispered Gus.
“Probably why they picked this spot. Easy to hide, easy to ambush from.”. More sweat came from under the fedora. Kiltoe again stopped Gus. Kiltoe pulled a gun from under his coat and indicated to Gus he should do the same.
They rounded the corner. The girl was sitting on a dustbin swinging her legs back and forth. Anther lolly was in her mouth.
“It’s not nice to follow a girl about the place you know. Are you pedo’s ?’ said Scandal.
Gus immediately raised his gun.
“Look Missy, we saw what you did back their. So no offence if we take you into custody.”
“Custody? Are you Police. You do not look like Police. My Uncle says not to go anywhere with people you don’t know. Where’s your badge?”
Kiltoe put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a worn wallet. He flicked it open. “We are detectives for the EPA. Happy now?”
“Ok. Better arrest me then.” Scandal held her hands out to be cuffed. Her lolly was in one of her hands. “
Gus looked at Kiltoe. “Shall I?” he asked
Kiltoe nodded. Gus went forward through the debris. There was a click under his foot and a puff of steam came up from the floor. Gus fell forwards. His foot and leg up to his knee had vapourised. He hit the floor hard, his gun clattering off into the boxes in the alley.
“Why you little sh…” said Kiltoe. He did not get far in pulling the trigger. Another bear which had appeared on top of a create behind the two men blew his head away. The scene was slightly comical in the fact that the bear flew backwards after pressing the trigger. The Fedora shot up in the sky and floated gently down to land in the puddle of blood swallowing the body.
Scandal jumped down from the bin. She carefully maneuvered around other unseen objects on the floor to where Kiltoe body had fallen. She picked up the wallet and gun he had dropped.
She turned to see Gus crawling towards where his gun was.
“I wouldn’t do that if I was you. “ Said Scandal. “Your not very bright. We have eyes and ears everywhere. Did you think you could meet somebody at their requested location without being spied upon? Enemy territory 101. We set up the area, the surveillance and the traps.”
Scandal found her bear. It had fallen upside down into a bin.
“What am I going to do with you. “She picked up the bear by its feet and gave it a quick dust off and hug.
“Did I do good?” asked the bear.
“Yes very good. “
She looked over at Gus still trying to crawl to his gun. Their was another click.
“Told you.” said Scandal.
Gus started to scream as the mist swallowed his body. The scream turned into a gargle.
