NHS BSA

NHS BSA is a NHS solutions and commissioning Authority. They provide a multitude of services for the NHS and affiliate bodies. As a commissioning authority they develop innovative solutions for the NHS using internal and external NHS suppliers. All these solutions require rigorous testing. As an employee of the NHS, I have been involved in development, testing and quality assurance of many of the NHS systems. Some of the solutions developed are:

  1. QALoad testing scripts to emulate hundreds of data entry staff using a variety of high transactional load applications.

  2. Test Partner automated systems to test the functionality of the system. The tests were configurable running a variety of test scenarios covering 6000+ test cases. The difficulty here was recognising the data and hence test case as the data delivered to the application was in no particular order.

  3. Java applications to integrate Web Sphere, MQ queues, Unix memory usage, Run SQL to support test cases.

  4. A derivative of TARCA which used a test partner server rather than a Java server.

  5. Ant scripts to instrument delivered WebSphere J2EE jars using Coburtura. This was done to examine the test coverage of the unit / automated and manual tests

  6. Perfomance tuning and reverse engineering of delivered code from internal and third party suppliers. This was to improve performance by interrogating the system and provide bespoke class injected solutions when code could not be amended by the supplier.

  7. SQL inspection and investigating. Aiding the Database Administrators in problem SQL and alternatives, by either amending code \ SQL \adding indexes or hints.

  8. Operating System \ application \ WebSphere container tweaking to squeeze additional performance from the operating environment.

  9. Development of reporting applications involving data mining of billions of records.

  10. Real time data entry and processing systems involving hundreds of simultaneous data processors.

  11. Assurance of new hardware and software purchases for the organisation.
